GRAND TIMES AT PENNINGTON

Success was abundant this week as Burnden gathered on the track to peg 5 miles around Pennington Flash – Leigh Harriers Athletics Club’s entry for the Central Lancs Grand Prix League.

Starting from the stomping ground of gold medal winner, Keeley Hodgkinson, the route was a pleasant one – taking runners through the woods and around the Flash on an undulating course.

First home for the Club was Michael Kermode – on fire in 33:01. Snapping on his heels was Lee White – 2nd MV50 in 33:16 and Steve Nolan followed third BRR but scooped 1st MV60 in 34:37. Mark Cannon was 3rd MV60 in 35:49 and Marcus Hamer 2nd MV65 in 38:49. Paul Christie took 3rd MV70 in 43:25.

Ladies were back in a flash with Gwen Kinloch first BRR and 1st FV60 in 37:45, Lyndsay Darbyshire second BRR and 1st FV55 in 38:08 and Vicki Hamer third BRR in 40:34. Gayle Gerrard was 2nd FV50 in 40:42 and Linda Doherty was 3rd FV50 in 41:12. Anne Ferguson was crowned 1st FV65 in 41:20.

MELISSA RACES THE PENNINES

Melissa Husbands embarked on an epic adventure as she survived a marathon on the Pennines. Self-proclaimed as the ‘Holy Grail of the Pennine’s Peaks, Pines and Trails’, the race is a young one, first born in 2022 – and it raises money for the local area via several charities.

Melissa described the experience as follows,

“It was a terrifically challenging 27.1 mile multi-terrain course that provided several punishing climbs along the 3814ft elevation route, but we were rewarded with stunning surroundings and glorious views. A test of mental and physical endurance, yet 6hrs 20 mins of fabulous fun!”

BERNIE AND MARTIN SUPPORT MND

A duo of Burndeners, Bernie Jones and Martin Archer, were out to support Matt Smith’s Charity Run in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association – the Smithy’s 5 Mile Trail. The race is a favourite among members and previously raised money for Bolton Hospice in March. The scenic route is a challenge although it is accessible for all fitness levels – Smith’s aim being to welcome everybody and to raise funds.

Martin crossed the line in 49:53 and Bernie in 49:54.
