Lostock AC welcomed a whopping 55 Burnden members to their popular ‘6 Miles of Smiles’ race on Sunday and the road-based course was a great opportunity to sneak in some PBs.
Part of the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, the local, flattish 6 has always had a good turnout with its dance music workout to start and its guaranteed finisher’s medal to end. The distinctive black-striped vests were out in force and the sheer quantity – 55 in a field of 442 - has awarded us a free place for next year - well done team!
There were maximum efforts all round from Burnden members with first finisher Matt Dewhurst a highlight – 12th overall in an astonishing 34:07 – faster than my average 5K! 2nd gentleman was Suleman Badat in 35:37 and 3rd was Mark Whittington in 36:25.
Sarah Watton was 1st Burnden lady in a super 41:49 with Gwen Kinloch 2nd in 43:46 and Francesca Caine 3rd in 47:13.
Personal course records were belted out of the road by the following Burnden besties who were delighted with their achievements.
Carol Richardson ricocheted 6 minutes from last year’s time –crossing in 59:38. Martin Cullen culled 16 seconds from 2023 with 44:39 and Jennifer Entwistle whistled away over 3 minutes – finishing in 1:00:58.
It didn’t stop there as Tony Fulop flipped off a minute – home in 1:02:34, Steven Walsh washed away 2 minutes on his 3rd Lostock with a time of 47:18 and, finally - where there’s a Willan, there’s a way, Ultra trainee Paul Willan waved goodbye to 16 seconds – on track with 41:45.

WINNARD’S ON A WINNER WITH SUB-HOUR
Newcomer to Burnden, Rick Winnard, made a splash at the weekend with a cracking time at the Stanley Park 10K in Blackpool.
Organised by Fylde Coast Runners, the picturesque double-looped course encircles the park and traces a flat route around its scenic paths. Rick was beaming from ear to ear with his time of 53:14 and enjoyed the course.
