The penultimate race on the Club Championship list was the annual ‘Winter Warmer’ Blackburn 10K. A misnomer this year, not many runners were warmed as they braved the freezing cold blasts of Storm Darragh to gather at Ewood Park – home of Blackburn Rovers.
Over 1,300 competitors took on the race, which starts and finishes at the football stadium and takes a winding tour of Blackburn town centre – passing over the bridge and by the Cathedral.
On her birthday weekend, Gwen Kinloch was first lady home again for 2024 in 44:06 – knocking off 12 seconds and claiming the 1st FV65 crown. Second lady was Lyndsay Darbyshire – 1st FV55 in 44:57 and third lady was Francesca Caine in 44:29.
Suleman Badat scored first for Burnden in a breathtaking 37:47 followed by Gareth Doherty in 41:04 and Lee White in 41:24.
Collecting Vet trophies alongside Gwen and Lyndsay were Marcus Hamer – 3rd MV65 in 45:39, Anne Ferguson – 2nd FV65 in 49:35 and Finlay Coyne – 2nd MV75 in 1:00:42.

ADVENTURES OF GED AND FRIENDS
Burnden’s Ged Turner is known for his love of off-road adventures and this year has seen him in some precarious places along with his fellow club runners.
First up was Honister Slate Mine, which actually leads runners through the underground mine wearing helmets! Adventuring up to Fleetwith Pike and Grey Knott’s, it’s a tough 6K race and Ged led his crew of Melissa Husbands, Steve Holt and Horwich RMI’s Mary White into joint 25th place.
More recently was the Mytholmroyd Fell Race, a 10K with a 500m climb. Described as ‘challenging’ and a ‘classic winter fell race’, the Pennines adventure takes participants through a variety of terrains and carries a requirement that runners bring navigation tools and waterproof clothing. Finishers are rewarded with a complimentary can of Vocation beer. First home was Ed Ashton – 56th place in 1:10:35 followed by Holcombe’s Verity Harrison – 29th place in 1:29:09, Andy Warburton – 137th place in 1:32:04 and Ged Turner – 155th place in 1:45:04.
